Hexaplex trunculus (Linnaeus, 1758), common name the “trunk murex”, “trunculus murex”, or “banded dye-murex”, is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Muricidae, the murex snails or rock snails. The shells were used to make a Tyrian Purple in Roman times.
